Hello Mr. Roberg!

Wow, you are finally in China! Sounds like you had a very smooth trip so far. It is blazing hot here and I was wondering what is the weather like there right now? Also, we hear alot about the polution in China and I even read that for the Olympics the Govt. would shut down factories around Bejing to improve the air quality. What have you observed on this subject?Lastly, what do the chinese people think of America? Do you think that with all of the censorship, they have an incorrect or distorted view of our country and culture? Have a great rest of your journey. The students who get you for a teacher next year will be lucky. I am sure you will have years of material to talk about! How interesting.

Hi Lief....Finally, I had the time (it is 94 degrees with no breeze...much too hot to be in my garden!) to read your last few updates and view your pictures! You're pictures are amazing. However, although you are looking happy and healthy, I think you appear thinner. I am thinking you should have had that Peking Duck!!!!
Love you and miss you, Mom (in-law)

Dear Flat Kat-
We've missed you! How wonderful it is to hear the latest! We know you are disappointed that Mr. Roberg was only treating you as kingly as you deserve for a day, but what can you expect from mere humans?

Our students have been looking at a map of China and following you. We've also seen a neat article of a "forbidden temple" and some other fascinating architecture from China. One student is particularly interested in dragons in chinese culture... have you seen anything with dragons, or read anything about them?

Thanks for feeling my pain, Mrs. M.

In fact, dragons are everywhere in China! They symbolize strength and power so many of the things made for the emperor or made to represent him were decorated with dragons. Even in today's culture, they are everywhere because the dragon has come to represent China. Other animals representing China are the lion, also representing power, and the phoenix, which represented the empress.

If you like dragons, China is the place to come!

I'll try to put a few pictures up of dragons I've seen, but it's a bit difficult with the site being blocked here. I'll see what I can do though.

Only a week until I come home! I'm excited.

why are you complaining about giving 5 dolars to a person who is poor when they give you a ride

Dear Jon,

I think you make a good point, in a sense. It would seem that $5 is not a lot for a ride. The problem is that the story gets lost in translation. I know it is hard for Americans and other Westerners to imagine, but the cost of living in developing countries like India and China truly are staggeringly low. A loaf of bread is under $1, a bottle of Coke is 50 cents, and a full meal in a restaurant costs less than $5. Now take into account that an official actual taxi would have cost $1.

It is not the actual $5 that I took offense to. I know that I had a choice to take the taxi instead, and have a standard charge when the meter was turned on. But that was the point. I figured that I would help out a poor gentleman by going with him instead. When charged me 5 times what it would have cost to take a safer and cleaner mode of transportation, I was a bit disappointed.

I hope that helps explain what I was trying to say. Thanks for bringing up a good point.
