Planning the Trip to China
I have finally scheduled my trip to China. The flight is scheduled, the visa application is in the mail, and I have a general idea of where I am going. As far as I know, the earthquake in China that hit a few days ago will not have a severe impact on my trip. My heart goes out to all of the victims and I am anxious to hear good news about the situation, but as far as I know, life is moving on even as the country faces a terrible natural disaster, just as the United States did in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
My flight is scheduled to leave on Wednesday, May 21 to Shanghai from Albany. It will be a twenty-hour trip with a stop in Chicago. I will have about 1 week in Shanghai and the surrounding area, including Nanjing and Hangzhou. From there, I will either travel to Qingdao, where there is some interesting colonial architecture and the best beer in China from the time of German imperialism, or directly to Xian, the ancient capital of China. After a few days in Xian, I will travel toward Beijing with a few stops along the way. I’ll end my trip in Beijing and the surrounding area. My flight home leaves on June 12th, and I’ll be arriving home on that same day (via Washington D.C.) because we’ll be crossing the international date line.
In short, it will be:

Shanghai – 4 days Qingdao – 2 days Xi’an – 5 days Pingyao & Taiyuan – 3 days Beijing – 5 days 3 days Travel mixed in |
Thanks for checking in, and I look forward to sharing my last trip of the year with all of you.
