Bodh Gaya: In retrospect

The tough thing about trying to keep this blog up-to-date is that I have so much to tell, and so little time.  Especially when I miss a day or two of updating, like I did on Bodh Gaya because the connection was so slow.  So, I’m going to try to be “short-winded” (though those of you who have had me in class know that’s probably impossible when I’m excited about a topic!).

The most interesting thing about Bodh Gaya was the religious significance.  It is the place where Buddha became enlightened, and is therefore the most important pilgrimage spot for all Buddhists.  Here’s a picture of the spot where Buddha became enlightened (though there was nothing there when Buddha was meditating) and the Temple that was built in his honor:

I also enjoyed watching the Tibetan monks, and other pilgrims, pray at the temple.

To see a religion in action is very exciting.   However, I also met a very nice college student who brought me to his village.  His name is Jhulian, and he is studying English.  He has big dreams to get a good job and be able to take care of his family.  Some day, he also hopes to come to the United States and visit Disney Land.

Well, I’ll let the picutures speak louder than words and leave it at that.

The weather has been GREAT! In fact, I got a little too much sun today because the sky was cloudless and it was 75 degrees. I forgot to put sunscreen on my balding head!! Wait till you see some of the pictures – I look absolutely silly! :)

  3. Hi Leif,
Those pictures are breathtaking-the temple in particular. I’ve been meaning to visit the Buddhist temple in Cairo since I moved back to NY but haven’t had the chance yet. These photos are inspiring me to get off my tookus this weekend and finally do it!

  4. Hi Leif,
My niece Amy is in C-A middle school. I noticed she has been tracking you, so I thought I would tell you how great I think this trip is.
    Come home safely.
